Penny & Bridgette on July 10, 2017

Today was hotter than blazes where we live. Usually for Penny, no problem. Bridgette, as indicated in the previous post, does not do well in heat or wind. We walked this morning around 7 am. It wasn't too bad, but the heat was coming on fast. On most days, The Girls can hold on until later afternoon, but that was not to be today.

The peak heat of the day heat hit in early afternoon. Penny insisted on going out, so I figured we could walk around the block and that would be it. Bridgette tried to hold her ground. She didn't like the feel of things the second she walked outside. She really wanted to return to the apartment where it was nice and cool.

Penny pulled. Ahhh...what to do? Penny won. As usual! She led the way up to the dog park about a 1/2 mile away. Before we got there, The Girls sought respite on the Village Green a large park with a huge expanse of green grass. The sprinklers were hissing on about half of the field, which provided small pools of water enough for The Girls to lap up sufficient amounts to keep them going.

On the far side of the park, there were shade trees and my girls - being the smart cookies that they are - headed straight for them. Penny sniffed around, but Bridgette stretched out on the shaded grass, stomach down, and her pink tongue hanging out one side of her mouth. She was panting pretty good.

Penny also took some time under the trees, mostly sniffing. She wasn't done yet though. After spending time under each shade tree, Penny was determined to reach her decided destination. The dog park was about another long block away. The heat was bearing down like...a hammer? Pretty close. Very humid.

We made it to the dog park where there were some shade trees at the entrance, but only one inside. At least I was able to give them some fresh water there. The temperature finally got to Penny She only stayed inside the fence for about three minutes. She was done, and Bridgette couldn't have been more grateful.

We didn't get far, though. The park and shade trees beckoned again. Bridgette was miserable. I picked her up and carried her under my arm for about two blocks. She consented to walk the rest of the way when we got within a block of our apartment.

Fresh food, cool water, and air conditioning, at last. Even Penny was happy to be out of the elements.

We walked earlier this evening too, but it was much cooler with a slight breeze. Once again, Penny knew exactly what route she wanted to take and led us on two blocks over, two blocks down, and then back to the apartment. Just enough for The Girls to do what they had to do. My Penny is so darn smart she even plans her walks! I swear she does.

Bridgette and I were very thankful Penny didn't choose the dog park again.
